Modern Cottage is a shingle-style coastal residence in Ocean Park on Kiawah Island, shaped by the live oaks, maritime forest, and marsh landscape surrounding it.

Modern Cottage rises among the live oaks of Ocean Park on Kiawah Island. Where many coastal homes spread low across their sites, this residence reaches upward — a tall, storybook composition inspired by the shingle-style cottage and reinterpreted for contemporary coastal living.

Steeply pitched gables and swept, flared eaves recall the seaside cottages of the Lowcountry tradition, while taller, sharper proportions give the house a distinctive vertical character. Cedar shingles cover a board-and-batten base beneath a standing-seam metal roof that folds over the dormers like a drawn hood. The round oculus window becomes the home's signature element: first appearing as an eye in the gable, then reinterpreted inside as a dramatic two-story architectural feature.

A brick stair rises to a steel-and-glass entry, establishing the home's vertical theme from arrival. Inside, vernacular materials are refined through a lighter, more contemporary palette. Pale shiplap walls, white-oak floors, exposed beams, and a cathedral truss ceiling define the great room, while an arched wood pantry door and barn-door primary suite introduce farmhouse references with greater precision and restraint.

A light-oak island kitchen and black steel windows keep the interiors crisp and current. Throughout the house, the design balances familiar coastal forms with modern proportions, carefully framed views, and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.

Outside, the house steps down the wooded grade toward a dark-bottom, negative-edge pool positioned above the marsh. A cantilevered stone terrace and lower fireside patio extend the living spaces into the landscape, creating a sequence of outdoor rooms beneath the Kiawah Island canopy.

Modern Cottage is a contemporary interpretation of a shingle-style coastal home — rooted in the maritime forest of Ocean Park, Kiawah Island, and composed to rise into the live oak canopy.
